The BME "Momentum" Statistical Field Theory Research Group was founded in 2012 in the framework of the "Momentum" programme of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, which is an excellence based initiative aiming at a dynamic renewal of academic research in Hungary. The group is hosted by the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, and is based in the Department of Theoretical Physics of the Faculty of Natural Sciences.

On the expiry of the original grant in 2017, the group's performance was evaluated and received the top grade "Excellent". 

Since then, the group continues its work supported by grants from various research funding agencies.
